ECFFA Mens nationals report 2018
The ECFFA mens A-team took part in the SAFFA Mens A-nationals even held in Kamberg KZN from 19 – 21 April this year. The team was composed of the following members: Gareth Webster (Captain), Dean Stoltz, Frikkie Botha, Devin Isemonger and David Taylor.
The event was run on the Mooi, upper Bushmans and Lower bushmans rivers, as well as 2 small stillwaters (Sourveld and Granchester). The rivers provided fantastic fishing for both brown and rainbow trout, while the stillwaters were a tough nut to crack. In general, the event was well run and the quality of the fishing ensured that this was one of the better A-nationals events held in the last few years.
In comparison to previous ECFFA Mens A-teams, this team did exceptionally well, earning a team silver medal. It is worth mentioning that the team was 36 points clear of the nearest contender for 2nd place (KZN) and remained in contention for the Gold medal (won by an all-Protea WPFFC team) until the final day. Individual results were as follows: Devin Isemonger 4th, David Taylor 8th, Frikkie Botha 11th, dean Stoltz 14th, Gareth Webster 20th.
This truly was a coming of age event for the ECFFA. This team benefited from careful and disciplined practice sessions on local waters for 3 days before the competition, a disciplined team dynamic, comfortable accommodation, group tying sessions and a well-structured daily de-brief. In short, every angler was supported and given the tools and knowledge to perform to the best of their ability. This is a marked improvement on the level of cooperation and preparation displayed by previous teams and the results speak for themselves! Well done! It goes without saying that a great time was had by all.
A big thank you to SAFFA and KZNFFA for organising a fantastic event and to all members of ECFFA for their support. We hope to see ECFFA teams consistently on the podium in future events!
